Optometry is a dynamic profession that constantly changes and faces new pressing issues. The future of optometry is influenced by many factors, but the American Optometric Association (AOA) plays a significant role in ensuring optometry’s success. Each year at the AOA’s Optometry’s Meeting, the AOA president speaks with OptometryStudents.com to discuss the future of optometry and how students and new graduates can best prepare for the challenges it may bring.
Dr. Mitchell Munson is the immediate past president of the AOA and served from 2013-2014. As president, Dr. Munson led the largest organized optometric group in preserving our practice privileges and connecting optometrists with each other. Take some time to listen to the AOA president’s perspective and advice on how we can adapt to a constantly changing future for optometry and perspectives on the biggest issues that optometry students and optometrists face:
- fast-paced changes in the focus of optometry
- sufficient growth in the job market
- importance of the medical model
- threat of online eye exams
- how to succeed as students
- how to stay involved

Thank you to Dr. Munson for taking time out of his busy Philadelphia Optometry’s Meeting schedule to share his thoughts with us! Last year, past president Dr. Ron Hopping shared his insight with students about the advent of heath care reform. This year, Dr. Munson shared his insight about the medical model and challenges optometry may face. What do you think will be the hot topic in optometry next year?
