The goal of this unique Southern College of Optometry residency program is to give graduate optometrists additional opportunities to expand their clinical knowledge and skills.

Description of Program: Our residency program emphasizes the diagnosis and treatment of binocular vision and visual perceptual disorders. The resident will be heavily involved with the vision therapy, diagnostic testing, and evaluations of the patients’ progress. The types of patients typically seen include: basic skills, perceptual deficits, reading/writing/spelling/math difficulties, Children with Special Needs (especially ASD, ADHD, LD, and dyslexia), strabismus/amblyopia, and traumatic brain injury. In addition, because a large number of our patients also receive occupational and physical therapy, the resident will gain experience collaborating with other professionals in their respective fields. The resident will have access to top of the line therapy equipment (including a Neuro Vision Rehabilitator and a touch-screen Sanet Vision Integrator), as well as to advanced diagnostic testing (such as a Readalyzer and Visual Evoked Potential). Finally, our program will provide invaluable experience in managing a successful vision therapy practice. The resident will work side by side with an incredible staff that prides themselves on team work.
Educational Opportunities: The resident will work side by side with Dr. Press reviewing cases and learning advanced diagnostic and therapy procedures. To supplement his or her “hands on” learning, the resident will also have access to our extensive library, as well as to the Southern College of Optometry’s on-line database, of which independent reading will be expected. The resident will also attend the Annual COVD meeting and several of Dr. Press’ seminars to allied professionals throughout the year. Finally, the resident will work closely with our office manager and supportive staff to gain invaluable experience in practice management.
